HOURLY WAGE: New Hire: $24.10 ·* 90 days: $25.06 ·* 1 year: $26.03 ·* 2 years: $26.95 ·* 3 years: $29.11

Performs duties in the field and in the office related to highway traffic and safety services. Applies knowledge and skills related to the field of highway traffic and safety and of highway construction and maintenance. The employee in this class is responsible to assist in the maintenance of traffic related inventory, highway signing, and the general use of traffic devices in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Work is performed under the general direction of the County Engineer and/or Department management staff. Knows the County’s Customer-Centered Culture principles, the County’s Mission, Strategic Plan and Core Values and demonstrates a commitment to customer satisfaction for all customers on a regular basis. Maintains physical and GIS sign inventories, and directs and/or performs the placement of traffic signs and related highway warning and directional sign and control devices. Prepares traffic counting devices and sets the counters in the field where directed. Assists Road Maintenance Supervisors (District Supervisors) in related highway signing. Performs routine maintenance on traffic control devices in the field and in the shop. Drives a dump truck (up to 60,000 lbs.) to transport sand, rock, dirt, brush and supplies. Acts as a flagger during road construction work. Operates equipment associated with snow removal operations. Operates construction equipment such as skid loaders, rollers, tractors, mowers and end loaders with buck or forks. Operates tractor and mower for mowing along roads and ditches and cuts trees and brush. Performs concrete, asphalt, and seal coat patching and replacement. Loads and unloads equipment and materials from trailers. Services and performs minor repairs to equipment. Replaces and repairs road signage. Utilizes tablets, computers and other technology to update GIS system, complete payroll, and complete Iowa One Call tickets. Operates a truck equipped with water storage tank and pump to flush storm drainage structures. Performs all other related duties as assigned to help drive a high level of customer satisfaction, fulfill the County’s mission and strategic direction and abide by Linn County Core Values. Knows the products they personally produce and the customers of each product. Listens to the “Voice of the Customer “and closes gaps between customer expectations and experience whenever possible.

Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required. Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in general highway maintenance activities required. Must possess a valid state of Iowa Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake and tank endorsements. Or possession of Class A CDL and the ability to pass air brake and tank endorsements within 21 days of transfer or hire into the position. Certification in general electrical standards as required by OSHA for related routine maintenance of traffic control devices (to be in hand or obtained within six (6) months of entry into this class). Working knowledge of modern methods and techniques as applied to traffic, signing, and safety as related to highway signing and control devices. Working knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Ability to understand and follow and written instructions. Ability to perform routine and specialized maintenance on traffic control and related electrical devices. Ability to perform a variety of physical tasks associated with road construction, maintenance and repair including bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing, twisting, crawling, reaching and sitting. Stand and walk frequently, sometimes on uneven and unstable surfaces such as at construction sites, roadway or ditch embankments. Work may be performed under adverse weather conditions and terrains. Must pass a County physical examination which includes a drug test after offer of employment, with random testing as determined by the County. Regular work attendance required.
